3/14: LCCR recently sent an edit memo (pdf) on U.S. compliance with ICERD to editorial boards around the country.

3/7: Grace Chung Becker, President Bush's nominee to be the next Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights and run the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice, will have her confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee next Tuesday, March 11.

3/6: On March 11, the National Fair Housing Alliance will release a book of essays called Segregation, which discusses the effect residential segregation has on the nation's economic viability.  More info on the book launch (pdf).

2/15: LCCR recently submitted its shadow report to the UN on the U.S. compliance with the CERD. And here's more info on the CERD.

1/29: Michael Mukasey won Senate confirmation to become Attorney General in part because assured Senators that he would resign if President Bush ignores or violates the law. If he was sincere in his assurances, then one of the first things he should do is to rescind the Legal Counsel’s decision concerning U.S. Civil Rights Commission appointees.  

1/24: Today, Congress introduced the Civil Rights Act of 2008.  Check out the reasons why civil rights groups like the bill, and, if you are really ambitious, read the text of the legislation (pdf).

Many of us believe

that our civil rights are protected, but the reality is they are under attack. In recent years, there has been a retreat from rigorous enforcement of civil rights laws and a narrowing of the ability of ordinary Americans to vindicate their rights in court. The American ideal of equality of opportunity cannot be achieved with a system of rights without remedies. We must reclaim our civil rights.
